Tomlinson Groundcare and its founder Robert Tomlinson
Robert was born and lived in Buxhall, near Stowmarket growing up on his parents’ poultry farm helping them out from a young age with the chicks and chickens, as well as caring for the goats, geese and turkeys. He also assisted his beekeeping father with the hives and honey-making.
Robert recognised his passion and skill lay with machinery and understanding how things worked quite early on in his childhood. He went on to study agricultural engineering at Otley College while an apprentice at Mitchell Rowlands in Buxhall. He then did a further year of study at Rycotewood College in Thame, Oxfordshire.
In 1978 Robert joined Overland Machinery and his lifelong obsession with the John Deere brand began. He started as an agricultural engineer, four years later becoming their parts manager and then a salesman, heading and specialising in the turf care equipment aspect of the business.
In 1991, Overland decided to move away from the turf care side of John Deere and Robert was offered the franchise. On March 1, 1991, he began trading as Tomlinson Groundcare, operating from one small workshop and showroom on the family smallholding with his wife Karen and three daughters Becca, Jo & Vicky assisting with the advertising campaigns.
Over the years Robert established the firm offering customers the unique opportunities to not only drive equipment but to really try machines out on the orchards and paddock areas surrounding the premises, making sure customers bought the right equipment for their needs, a reputation that soon became linked to Tomlinson Groundcare as a company as all employees had this in mind for their customers. This meant Tomlinson Groundcare took on further quality brands and a variety of equipment to assist his customers needs, from domestic to commercial users alongside John Deere.
As the customers and the demand grew so did the team and they began to outgrow the facilities. As his parents slowed down the animal shelters were removed and a purpose built workshop was built in 2005 and large showroom in 2009.
To Robert the Tomlinson Groundcare team was an extension of his family and in fact possibly viewed as another child to him. Not only did he throw his passion and enthusiasm into the business but he was also involved with the local community helping people where he could and always with a smile and dash of his humorous personality. More often than not, with his side kick Fox Terrier Toby!
Sadly Robert Tomlinson passed away in January 2019 but, the Tomlinson Groundcare Ltd team now headed up by Adrian Brown, are committed to operate with the same ethos and passion he showed. Keen to forge long-lasting relationships with private domestic and professional customers.
Today
We are a family run business with a team just under 20 employees. Despite our size we have the reputation for the most experienced team regarding turf machinery for domestic and commercial use in the area. We also have the facilities for customers to come to our premises and actually try the machines we have in our large showroom. With the largest fleet of demonstrator lawnmowers in the region we pride ourselves in knowing and understanding our equipment to assist our customers with making the right choice for their needs. We also provide the option of demonstrating our equipment in our customer’s grounds, so that the customer can get a feel for what the machinery can do for them at their premises.
We have experienced Parts and service team whom work closely together to help our customers receive the right parts to get our customers back to their jobs as soon as possible. With most parts already in stock for our customer’s needs, we can service all brands of machinery. We have engineers out on the road as well as in our purpose built workshop to assist with customer’s services and repairs. Our sales team who not only assist you buy the right products for you but are there with advice on how to achieve the desired result in your garden, grounds or sports fields. We are always present at the large and some of the smaller county shows to assist with advice and find the products in the price range and quality you require.
We are main dealers for John Deere however, to name a few of our other brands we deal with are AL-KO, Charterhouse, Dennis, DR, ECHO, Ego, Grillo, SCH, Sisis, D.W Tomlin, Warwick, Weibang. We carefully select the products that we stock and sell to make sure that our customers receive the quality they need and expect.
